Cough : You more than likely do NOT require an antibiotic. Try using Mucinex or the equivalent. Good Luck

Cough,sputum: My rule of thumb is that if a head cold preceded the appearance of a cough productive of discolored sputum and these symptoms persist for over 7-10 days, I feel there is an active bacterial bronchitis or possible pneumonia. I would want to examine the patient, decide if he/she should have a chest xray and would prescribe an appropriate antibiotic even if it's just bronchitis.

Chronic cough: You have a chronic productive cough, and usually there is an infection associated. I would suggest a sputum culture and a chest radiograph. A virtual consult upon follow up may be useful to you and your physician.
