Maybe/not: There are anti-germ factors in tear film that can suppress infection, so they do have some self protection. You might consider putting mittens on the hands if this is a constant issue since it prevents the fingers from direct contact, but infant behavior is really not something you can control. It may not be worth the extra effort.
