Tailbone abscess: Pilonidal cysts are caused by groups of hairs and debris trapped in the pores of the skin in the upper cleft of the buttock, near the tailbone, and cause an abscess. Sometimes the abscess is just opened and allowed to heal, but with recurrent episodes, the entire cyst is excised. Usually the wound is not stitched closed but is allowed to heal from the inside out, or with "secondary intention."
