Quite possibly: gastro-laryngo reflux. Try 2 OTC famotidine daily for two weeks. If no improvement see your PCP again and inform him or her as to what you tried.

Chest pain: A normal chest x-ray early on does not rule out pneumonia. Pneumonia is best diagnosed by a good physical examination and best confirmed by a CT (the CT is not needed for most patients). Other things to consider whether your chest pain is associated with rib pain from coughing. I would recommend seeing your doctor again.

Chest pain: Chest pain on a deep breath may result from prolonged hacking cough straining an intercostal muscle or pinched intercostal nerve that runs between 2 ribs. Pleurisy is less likely without fever. Sometimes a persistent hacking cough is an asthma equivalent. I recommend that you consult a pulmonologist for diagnosis and treatment.
