Depends on kidneys: With normal kidney function it is virtually impossible to overdose on magnesium. This is why doctors can administer several grams/day directly into the veins of pregnant women to arrest premature labor or in ICU's to stabilize fibrillating hearts. Clinically significant hypermagnesemia is only seen in dialysis patients taking magnesium laxatives and patients receiving IV Magnesium in the hospital.
