Usually carafate: should not be taken "as needed". Instead it is prescribed three times daily and you should notice an improvement in 2-3 weeks if the correct diagnosis was made. If you do not then re-visiting your doctor would be a good idea. Carafate breaks down in gastric acid forming a coating for small gastric ulcerations protecting them from gastric acid thereby decreasing pain.
