Only if fx is deep: Not standard. Depends if fx is into the deeper parts of the tooth. If crack is into pulp, root canal is likely to be recommended. Certain molar cracks are not even treatable. Testing and exam before treatment is routine to determine the need for a root canal. Otherwise, a restoration alone should work.

Only if necessary: What treatment is needed for your tooth depends upon how much structurally sound tooth structure is present, the health of the supporting bone and gum, and the health of the nerves of the tooth as well as the proximity of the decay\fracture to the nerve canals. When your dentist actually examines you along with x-rays of the tooth, he\she can discuss what treatment options are appropriate for you.
