Hemoglobin A1c: With regard to A1c of 5.0, that result is a normal level for the test. The A1c result can be affected by anemia or changes in RBC (red blood cell) production, so if there are no issues with anemia or RBC production the test is valid and you are not close to being pre-diabetic. If not then you can look into checking your blood sugar before and after meals to be more certain.

Not a concern: Your HbA1c level is in the normal range: 4.0 – 5.6, so diabetes is not presently a concern. Depen ding on the number of risk factors you have, some guidelines recommend that you get follow up testing for diabetes (including a repeat A1c) every three years (less than two risk factors) or every year (two or more risk factors for diabetes).
