Information/reassure: Generally a good approach would be to 1) in age appropriate language let him or her know that the loved one has an illness, 2) explain the illness in terms that are meaningful and make sense, while keeping out the details that could be overwhelming for the child, and 3) no matter what, convey that the loved one is being taken care of well, and that there's nothing for the child to worry about.
