A member asked:

What hcg levels (min and max) does a hpt detect? also, are 2 blood/urine pregnancy tests needed to determine molar/ectopic/viable pregnancy?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

"HPT" ?: Home pregnancy tests detect only higher levels of HCG so early pregnancies may not be detected reliably. Usually rapid rising of HCG levels occur with more advanced intrauterine pregnancies, and molar pregnancies. Ectopic pregnancies because of poor blood vessel nutritive properties may not be detected by HPT's. See your gyn provider for a pelvic ultrasound which may determine which is true.
