Leg cramp: There are various reasons for leg cramps: leg positioning; neurologic disorders; metabolic disorders, fluid volume electrolyte disturbances; and medications. Yet the most common is idiopathic (the medical term for we don't know why.) Therefore, the treatment for them is different based on the cause. Cramp: Typically cramps occur in large muscles that are either overused or tight with some element of dehydration. I would recommend heat, massage and stretching. I would keep the area warm and avoid sudden temperature changes hot ->cold. I would hydrate with water or gatorade. In severe cases, you can ask for a prescription for a muscle relaxant such as flexeril or tonic water. Lab tests -sodium, k, etc
