Taper: Slowly tapering off the xanax is the safest method to avoid withdrawal symptoms. Discuss this technique with your prescribing physician or psychiatrist. Example: go from one twice a day to one in the AM and 1/2 in PM for several days and then 1/2 twice a day for several days, and then 1/2 once daily for several days and then 1/2 every other day and then none after a week as long as you feel ok
