Dr. can check throat: New throat symptoms can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold virus or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually a person sees the doctor if the throat symptoms are bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). A primary care doctor's office can care for tonsillitis.

Can or should: Tonsillitis may or may not require medicine as many are self healing viruses. If it was confirmed as strep A. your doc can give a long acting penicillin shot, but it is a big one, into her bottom. The process is a simple office procedure & requires only that they have the medicine on hand. I never suggest a kid go to an ER with an simple issue that will place them at low priority to be seen.
