A member asked:

8yr old daughter has very swollen and sensitive glands on the one side of her neck, a fever comes and gos. been on penicillin for 4 days no change?

It happens: If the issue is really one requiring antibiotics like strep, I expect some decline in the fever by 4 days. However the gland swelling can persist for a week or more. If the issue is primarily viral the fever will run its course over time as would swelling. If it is not strep and the germ is not sensitive to the meds, I would expect no change & some worsening.

Fever persists: As fever has continued, safer to see the doctor. By now, your dear 8 year old daughter, should be more active, her glands not as tense or sensitive, and idealy her temperature should be lower, and back into the normal range-not still having a fever on/off.
