GERD: Hello. GERD is the production of excess stomach acid that works its way back up the esophagus in an abnormal path. Foods and liquids that cause acid to be made in an excess amount include tomato sauce, greasy foods, hot spices, alcohol, coffee and others. Try not to eat right before bedtime and elevate your head of bed while you sleep. See your doctor for further evaluation for a GI Endoscopy.

The basics: Air is captured in the swallowing process for food or liquids. It will enter the stomach & can only leave as a belch or fart after passing through the gut. The stomach is a muscular organ that squeezed the air/food mix to prepare it for digestion. That air/food mix can backwash with stomach acid if you have a weak lower esophagus. Slower eating may reduce air swallowing. This is a normal event.
