Some questions first: Is there any color change that would suggest poor blood flow or a broken bone? Breaks usually trigger local bleeding that causes a bruise. Is there an obvious area of local swelling or does everything look normal ? A cool soak in iced water in the first hours can help some, as can elevating the foot above your heart level. However, you need to have this looked at if it interferes with function.

Be seen: If you are in “excruciating pain” as you say, you could have a serious injury. I would not hesitate to be seen for an accurate diagnosis. Some things can be quite benign while others may need intervention.
