Ankle pain: Was there trauma? History of systemic disease?: Diabetes, RA, HBP, genetic disorder. Pain awaken from sleep? Swelling, radiating pain/numbness/tingling? Pinpoint tenderness? The possibility of a gouty flare is possible requiring blood tests, or local aspiration. X-ray of the lower leg, ANKLE, and foot will reveal bony pathology, and a complete/thorough exam may be in order. See your doc-
