What are symptoms of bipolar and symptoms of borderline personalility disorder?

5 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

They are different: Bipolar disorder is when a person experiences both extremely out of the ordinary moods (e.g. Reduced need for sleep, feeling high but with no drugs, etc) which then alternates with clinical depression. These two cycle back and forth. Borderline personality disorder on the other hand is a long-standing set of traits that a person has that include fear of abandonment and extreme emotions, etc.

Borderline: Intense fear of abandonment, being manipulative, impulsivity, a tendency to think of people and things in all good or all bad terms, self mutilating behaviors, drug and alcohol abuse, sexual impulsivity, a profoundly disturb sense of self, and extreme emotional volatility. Bipolar disorder is characterized by extreme mood swings from deep depression to the stratosphere of mania.
