Stenosis: In laymen's terms, lumbar spinal stenosis refers to pinched nerves in the lumbar spine. Treatment options, in order, include physical therapy, medications, spinal injections, and surgery. Although daunting, surgery to alleviate the pinched nerves of stenosis can be very successful, if all other treatment options have failed.

The majority treated: Non operatively (meds, pt, epidural steroid injections) most spinal stenosis is generally due to diffuse aging of spine with the facet joints overgrowing & discs degenerating/bulging as they collapse . About 15% improve with time, 15% get worse & the rest remain as they are. Of those that go to surgery, most do well until about 5 years postop, with some regressing do to further degeneration.

Common problem: For patients that have failed appropriate conservative care, surgery can be very beneficial. A thorough work up is required. The most common surgical treatment is a laminectomy. The success rate is good. Check out spinehealth .Com.
