Two very different : Laryngospasm is when your vocal cords go into spasm. This can cause an abrupt onset of shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. You could pass out in an extreme situation. Cricopharyngeal spasm relates to the cricopharyngeal muscle which creates a valve in the upper esophagus . When it spasms, you can have difficulty swallowing liquids or foods. These two conditions are separate.

They are different: Laryngospasm is a spasm of the vocal cords in response to a foreign body (food) or liquid entering the airway. It typically lasts less than a minute but in some cases longer making it nearly impossible to breath in although exhaling is easier. Cricopharyngeal spasm (lump in throat) is a spasm of the cricopharyngeal muscle that participates in the valvular action of the esophagus to prevent reflux.
