Negative pressure : Inflammation spreading to Eustachian tube while we are having cold results in blockage of airflow into middle ear. Absorption of existing air in middle ear into blood stream is followed by negative pressure in the middle ear which produces 'stopped up' feeling and even pain.

Deposition ?: Mucous normally travels from its origination on the inner walls of the middle era down the Eustachian tube to the throat. That is how the system is designed. If the tube is blocked, the normal air in the middle ear will lose oxygen & form a vacuum which can stretch the ear drum & cause pain.
