Yes they can: occur at any time but usually will have some trigger such as drinking or eating excessively hot or cold foods. Often they are related to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). They are rare but seem to occur in patients who are older (60-80 yo) and anxiety, depression and hypertension all seem to increase the likelihood of occurrence.
