Sure: The important question is WHY do a culture. We do cultures to look for a bacterial urinary infection, which is typically caused by one type of bacteria each time. All humans have different kinds of bacteria at the pee hole (meatus) and nearby. These can show up in the culture for normal people, which is why small numbers of several strains usually means normal surface bacteria.

The basics: A urine culture is done by taking an amount in a tiny loop, like people blow bubbles from only smaller & dragging it across the surface of a growth media (agar). The drag pattern is like rows in the field. It is incubated overnight and ANY germ or germs in that urine can show up growing. A single germ in large quantity would suggest a true infection. Multiple germs would suggest contaminants .

Urine culture result: Urine culture is performed to identify which bacteria (or other microorganism) is causing a urinary tract infection. A UTI is usually caused by one organism, but can rarely be caused by multiple organisms especially in the setting of immunosuppression or a chronic indwelling catheter. Diagnosis of UTI and thus interpretation of culture results must be done by a trained medical health professional.
