A doctor has provided 1 answer

What purpose?: Thoracentesis is a safe procedure in experienced hands under sterile conditions. What is the purpose? Sometimes it is used as a diagnostic tool, sometimes therapeutic to remove fluid from the pleuralspace that may be compressing the lung. Risk of infection is low if done using sterile technique and if post procedure x-ray shows good expansion of lung and no evidence of air in pleural space d/c OK
