Why the hiccups?: Hiccups, intermittent contractions of the diaphragm/intercostal muscles, are usually self-limited. Physical maneuvers that may help include: breath holding, sipping cold water, pulling on the tongue, gargling w/ water, swallowing a teaspoon of dry sugar, pulling knees to chest or leaning forward to gently compress the chest. Hiccups >48 hours may be serious. See your doctor.
