Does bright light damage the cornea or the retina? in which cases would it damage one of these and how would it happen?

Cornea/retina: The cornea is usually not affected unless the light causes the cornea to get dry in which case you run the risk of irritation and possible abrasion. With regard to the retina - yes looking at a very bring light can damage this.
