Separate pathway: The human immune system is capable of responding to hundreds of separate immune challenges daily and does so from the first day it travels down the birth canal. The injected vaccine will trigger whatever the child's immune response would be on any day, cold or not. The flu shot is never perfect because the flu to which you are exposed may be a new strain not in the vaccine. It is what we have.
