Maternity leave: If there are problems in your last trimester, your leave will be discussed with your OB provider. Most wait until delivery before using maternity leave, since for most insurances , this "time off" is paid for by employers, and you will need the time since new babies tend to require extensive work by the mom and dad !

Time off work : Maternity leave is a policy dictated by your employer and is different for every company. FMLA is US law that permits someone to take off up to 12 weeks for medical issues. That time can be used at your discretion. Doctors can place you on short or long term disability. In a normal healthy pregnancy this typically starts when you go into labor. If you have a pregnancy complication then sooner

Do you qualify ?: Depending on the size of business or workplace, they may/not be requires to offer maternity leave with or without pay. You should check with your employer or their representative on the specifics. If your contract offers maternity leave, sick days and or personal time you can often combine them. Unless complications lay you up prior to delivery I would avoid using them until needed.
