Interesting Question: The explanation for fluid retention (bloating and edema (ankle swellling) is a bit unclear but it is a FACT...Alcohol acts to release water from the body (frequent urination etc) and after imbibing the body (kidneys) act to retain that missing fluid by retaining SODIUM which causes the reverse ..ie: water retention ..this water is held by various spaces in the body and in your case your ankles!
