Spotting 1st TM: Spotting may occur at any time, but is common in the first 3 months of pregnancy especially in the 8th to 9th week, when the ovarian "corpus luteum" stops production of progesterone, and the placenta still cannot match the ovarian level, so withdrawal bleeding can occur. See your OB provider for an ultrasound, as placenta previa can also cause bleeding.

Needs evaluation: Any bleeding during pregnancy needs to be evaluated promptly by your doctor. About 50% of women experience some degree of bleeding in early pregnancy making it very common but not normal. Most are fine but sometimes bleeding can indicate a tubal pregnancy or miscarriage. Get checked.
