Exam advised: this sharp shooting pain may be caused by a pinched intercostal nerve or muscle that runs between 2 ribs. Another possibility is an inflamed joint at the junction of the rib and breast bone and sternum, a condition called costochondritis. There is usually associated joint tenderness. Both possibilities are more nuisance than serious, but a physician can advise her best after an examination.
