Many tests done: Sharp shooting pains in the rib cage may be due to pinching of the intercostal nerve. A deep breath often accentuates it. If there is tenderness on touching the rib cage i would recommend a spot xray of that rib area. Pinching of these intercostal nerves tend to come and go and are a nuisance rather than a serious problem. Your physician can advise you.
