Can't say for sure: It can be a dental issue. It can be an infection in the tissues of his cheek or the glands. It could be from trauma. With so little information this is as much as we can say.

Swelling: Could be from tooth infection, blocked Parotid salivary gland, gum infection, injury, neoplasm, etc. Start with your child's Dentist. Appropriate treatment or referral will help your son.
