I have veinous insufficiency and got a veinous ulcer. my family doctor treated it but did not refer me to a specialist. is a specialist not required?

Venous ulcer: You should definitely see a vein specialist for a full venous evaluation including a venous ultrasound. Venous ulcerations have a high recurrence rate and it is important to identify the cause and threat this before the ulceration recurs. Many times the cause of the ulcerations are high venous pressures in the ankles due to venous insufficiency. This can be treated with a high success rate.

Depends: Your family doc may have plenty of experience in treating these depending on their own interests/practice. Specialists often consider other specialists the only ones qualified to treat patients and overlook the fine job generalists will do. If/when a good family doc considers a specific patient beyond their abilities they refer them out.
