Antibiotics first: Tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsil. This infection can often be controlled with the use of a prescribed antibiotic and warm salt water rinses. If it does not resolve with the above treatment, the tonsil will usually need to be surgically removed.

Depends: First, you don't remove tonsils during an active infection. There is too much bleeding/complications. If a patient is having 5 or more tonsil infections a year, or they trigger sleep apnea, the procedure might get approved by an insurer. You could otherwise pay all costs out of pocket if desired. A visit with an ENT surgeon could start the process.
