Different brain area: Amnesia can be specific to a certain time period and does not necessarily imply the inability to form new memories going forward. If there is such a lack of the ability to form new memories due to structural brain damage or strokes then it has to be considered that speech and language is in general located in a different area of the brain and may continue to work ok.
