Depends: All people, kids included rarely sleep more than 4 hours at a stretch without coming to a shallow state of alertness. Most do one 4 hr stretch followed by 45-90 min cycles. Adults roll over & forget it. Kids can alert but will return to sleep if you have allowed them to develop self directed sleeping to start. This means no rocking to sleep or similar direct contact.
