Sprain: You most likely sprained it. If the pain is getting better, that’s a good sign. Have you taken X-rays to rule out a fracture? It’s also worth wrapping your finger with Coban or coflex for stability. You can find this in the drug store. Remember that a sprain does take long to heal. If it’s still painful after another 2-3 weeks, with no decrease in pain, it’s a good idea to see an orthopedist.

Things to look for: If you can curl all fingers into a fist & stretch them to full extension it is a good sign. Any restriction of this is a bad sign. Any discoloration on a segment of any finger is likely a break. If it just still hurts & you can do all the movements, you are likely okay to just monitor it.
