A member asked:

I took an hiv antigen/antibody test and it was negative. my last potential risk was years ago. could it be a false negative?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Sure, but...: Life is not perfect, so tests have false positives or false negatives. A "potential risk" means maybe there was no risk. A person who knows his blood-contact partner had HIV virus usually does not say "potential risk" but leaves off the word "potential." If there was no good reason to suspect HIV transmission, then a negative test result is extremely accurate, especially after months or years.
