Can there be a way to treat moderate depression and anxiety without going on medication?

Yes: Psychotherapy (different modalities) can succesfully treat it without medication, although those are not necessarily antagonic approaches. Regularly psychiatrists use both (in a sequence, or at the same time) to maximize outcomes and obtain the fastest results.
