Individual choice...: We are free people living in a free country, which means lab tests are not mandatory. The reason to check for major chromosomal abnormalities in a baby fetus is to help nature abort a defective fetus if a major mutation is found. Nature is supposed to abort a baby (called a miscarriage) who has a major mutation, but sometimes misses a defective fetus. If so, doctors can do a therapeutic abortion.

No....but: If you would NEVER consider abortion if the studies show a defect, why bother. Some would want to know because if they have a defect, some are survivable but would have a better chance if delivered at a hospital with a neonatal unit. They would also be able to prepare emotionally for the outcome. The choice is really up to you.
