Doctor can recheck: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is "super sore", recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Strep throat infections can happen even after tonsils are removed.

You should expect it: What you had removed were two globular "Palatine" tonsils at the entrance to your throat. There is other similar tissue in the roof of your throat and more in patches from there to your anus. Removing your tonsils can reduce the intensity of throat infections but as you have a throat & germs exist, you can become infected. Strep & viruses both attack these areas, tonsils or not.
