Abcess: An abscess or boil is best treated with hot(not too hot) applications to promote drainage of pus. If no drainage and severe pain and swelling, a drainage procedure by a physician or surgeon is usually needed. Antibiotics like the penicillin family may be prescribed but aren't as effective as drainage for boils but methylprednisilone(a corticosteroid) is not useful.
