Exam needed: Fluttering sensations in the left side of the chest are usually caused by cardiac rhythm disturbances. Simple rib cage muscle twitching is another possibility. If symptoms persist your physician will examine your chest and heart. A heart monitor for 24-48 hours as an outpatient will check your heart rhythm when you feel the fluttering. This will rule in or out a cardiac cause of the fluttering.
