The right doctor: Encephalitis can be caused by an infection with a bacteria or a virus. The causative organism needs to be determined initially before any medication is administered. Encephalitis: If it's viral encephalitis, antiviral medications are used. If it's part of a bacterial meningitis,antibacterial agents are used. A collaboration between neurologist and infectious disease specialist would be ideal. The neurologist takes care of noninfectious encephalitis cases. Encephalitis is a dire condition requiring expert intensive care.
