Yes: Paps are for the detection of precursors to cervical cancer. While cervical cancer is caused by a virus most of the time, that virus (hpv) is very common and the preceding infection has happened years before. Current guidelines for any woman between 30-65 are for pap tests every 3 years or combined pap test with hpv testing every 5 years.
