Sleep paralysis: Sleep paralysis. It's not rare and happens when you awaken during REM stage of sleep (rapid eye movement, when we dream). We are programmed to be paralyzed so we don't actully move as we are dreaming (e.g., not really diving off the bed, trying to fly!). If only a few seconds, you should be able to live with it, knowing it's harmless. If it remains bothersome, see a neurologist or sleep expert.
