Sleepiness/confusion: Gabapentin can be very effective in treating certain types of pain such as that caused by neuropathy in diabetics. Unfortunately, this pain relief usually comes at a price especially in older patients. It may lead to somnolence, sleepiness and confusion which in turn may lead to accidents such as falls. One strategy to consider is taking the lowest possible dose right before bedtime.
