Can you let me know how many years will it take for a mild cataract to become ripe?

Ancient term: The term ripe is no longer used when describing cataracts. Cataracts need to removed with they interfere with the vision such that activities are affected. An example would be difficulty seeing to be comfortable driving at night. Most cataracts develop slowly and are present for years before surgery is advised. If you are diabetic or smoke, your cataracts will develop faster.

Cataract info: Not all cataracts require surgery. If best vision is worse than 20/40 or glare is significantly affecting VA, most surgeons prefer to do surgery soon but depends on pt's sx, pt's risk factors, pt's preferences; also, though no guarantees with any surgery, many patients are less dependent on glasses & even glasses free after surgery which helps many decide for surgery soon. eyedoc2020.blogspot.com
