Check liver enzymes: Ammonia is produced in tissue and metabolized to urea , then excreted by the kidneys. An odor of ammonia may indicate a liver that is not functioning well. Common causes are hepatitis or cirrhosis. A check of liver enzymes, ammonia level, and physical exam.
